"Content is king" is a general rule of thumb among web designers. I try to write interesting articles and I have had a few positive remarks about my content which makes me feel that perhaps I am doing something right. For a site to become more popular, however, with a feeling of growth and with people sharing constructive comments, what else is needed?

What do you think are the most important things about a website or its owner or its design? I've just had about 5000 visitors in the last 4 days because of one article I wrote that got mentioned on one popular site and then got mentioned on a few more. Now I like interaction and exchange of ideas and views as much as anyone, so when I see that only 2 people commented in that time and neither entered into further discussion, I start to wonder. (Commenters reading this, please don't get me wrong! I am not complaining about your comments. Quite the opposite, I welcome them. Thank you)

The question puzzling me is why didn't some of the other visitors comment? When I look at the logs and find that 99% of visitors read the article but did not look elsewhere on the site, it just makes me feel like I've got something completely wrong if I want more interaction. OK, CSS Resizable Underlines is not the most riveting subject matter but there are other articles on the site such as PHP Style Switcher, Stretchy Images and Expanding Images that I thought would be of some interest to the same audience and might cause a little bit of interaction. There's something I don't understand here.

So, if you can spare a minute or two to comment, perhaps you can help me out? What do you think are the most important things about a website or its owner or its design?

just my thoughts…

content IS king…

but good presentation is also required to
keep anybody past a few moments…

(you do very well there by the way)...

don’t try to push your content past what
is natural, because forced content is
already everywhere…

a webring could draw more for areas you
are involved…

(wish i had 10% of your art skillcraft)...

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, William. I hadn’t thought of forced content before and I will have to be aware of that. I haven’t yet found a webring I’ve wanted to join but it’s a good idea. You are probably being modest about the art skillcraft but glad you like what I’ve done! I wish I had 10% of the artistic talent of many graphic designer’s sites I’ve seen. Some are simply stunning!

I’ve been thinking lately that many visitors only leave comments on ‘high profile’ web sites, in the hope they will get more traffic I suppose. Also I think many people just whizz round hundreds of sites every day, so don’t have time to comment unless it is totally relevant to them.
